Beijing, July 16 : China has urged the countries outside the area of South China Sea to stay away from territorial disputes, following a proposal by a U.S. official to change the existing state of affairs in the region.
A Chinese Foreign Ministry spokesman said that China had independent rights over the Nansha Islands and the surrounding waters, reports the China Daily.
According to sources, some countries had illegally taken charge in some parts of China through arms and construction that China had entirely opposed.
China claimed that it would religiously work towards maintaining its rights and sovereignty and resolve disputes with countries in order to safeguard China’s stability.
All countries had agreed to practice self-restraint to handle disputes including China and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations (ASEAN) in an agreement signed in 2002, a Chinese Foreign Ministry Spokeman said.
