NEW DELHI: Boxer Sarita Devi on Wednesday received her 2014 Asian Games bronze medal, which she had declined to accept, from the Indian Olympic Association.

Sarita broke down on the podium during the Asian Games medal ceremony for the lightweight 57-60 kg category in Incheon in October, refusing to wear the bronze medal. She accepted the medal in her hand and wiped her tears holding it, before handing it to South Korean silver medalist Ji Na Park, who had defeated Sarita in a controversial bout.

Sarita’s stance led the International Boxing Association (AIBA) to provisionally suspend the boxer. However the AIBA is yet to take a final call on the quantum of the punishment.

The sports fraternity stood behind her since the announcement of her suspension. Even cricket icon Sachin Tendulkar appealed to the entire nation to support the woman.

However, it remains to be seen if AIBA withdraws the ban.
