NEW DELHI: Unearthing a major bribery scandal in the income tax department s investigation wing, the CBI arrested a joint commissioner of the department, two chartered accountants and a businessman while another IRS officer and several middlemen were being questioned.
The CBI said it was investigating a larger conspiracy where I-T officials, chartered accountants and businessmen joined hands to settle I-T investigations against companies/individuals for payment of huge amounts in bribe.
In the operation which started on Saturday across Mumbai and Chennai, the agency arrested Salong Yaden, joint commissioner of income tax posted in Chennai, CBI spokesperson Kanchan Prasad said.
The others arrested are chartered accountants Sanjay Bhandari and ShreyasBhandari and managing director of Chennai-based real estate firm SPG and RGHiteshKawad, Prasad said, adding that several other companies were also under the scanner.
Sources said the businessmen were seeking undue favours from income tax officials with their chartered accountants acting as middlemen.
In 16 places searched so far, the agency seized cash and ornaments worth Rs 1 crore, 16 laptops, 13 CPUs, nine mobile phones, three Ipads, property papers and other documents.
